SHIATSU is a Japanese form of acupressure therapy that promotes healing by correcting energy imbalances in the body. Shiatsu is based on the same principles as acupuncture, tai chi, and other forms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
According to TCM, illness is caused by imbalances in the body's flow of energy, or "qi" in Chinese and "ki" in Japanese. Ki, or energy, can accumulate and become trapped in trigger points along meridians in the body. The Japanese refer to these points as "tsubo."
Shiatsu acupressure therapy focuses on releasing blocked points so that the body's energy can flow freely, restoring balance and health. Unlike acupuncture, which is characterized by its use of needles, Shiatsu relies mainly on thumb pressure to alleviate pain.
-
Always look for and treat the cause of your pain. Research suggests that bodywork stimulates the release of natural pain-relievers such as endorphins.
Over time, areas with poor circulation form trigger points—highly irritable spots that refer pain, tingling, or other sensations elsewhere in the body. These trigger points usually form in a predictable pattern. Shiatsu practitioners can relieve pain more efficiently by using their knowledge of acu-points and energy channels to move blocked or stagnant energy.
As muscles tense around referred pain, the pain spreads. Trigger points respond well to bodywork techniques such as pressure and stretching. Bodywork counteracts the body's response to stress, thereby relaxing muscle tension and allowing heart rate, blood pressure, and circulation to return to normal.
